I’m selling a few parts from the S3 online and have listed them in some of the model or part specific Facebook groups I’ve been a part of.

Already sold one item super quickly and have someone interested in another. Now, normally, I just have them PayPal me funds and provide an address and then I ship out the part. Never had an issue doing this with all the parts I sold off my old BRZ to folks all over the country.

A guy who’s interested in one of the parts I’m selling has asked me to put it on eBay, which makes me think it’s a scam of some sort, but how?  It’s a $600 part, FWIW.

I don’t sell parts, but I’d just assume the ebay guy wants to avoid being scammed himself by buying on a service where he can get his money back if you don’t deliver. Granted, he could scam you by claiming it wasn’t delivered and demanding his money back, but I’d assume having tracking and insurance on your shipment would protect you, especially with pictures before sending.

I’d guess it is harmless beyond whatever you have to pay to ebay.

I am not sure what the scam would be other than what facw mentioned. I would tell him that he can either PayPal you the funds and you will ship it out or he can try to find another part from someone else. I hate when people try to dictate how I am going to sell my things.

The problem is that the eBay+PayPal combo very aggressively decides in favor of the buyer, with the seller forced to take it due to eBay’s monopoly power.

Honestly, I would back away from this deal entirely.

The protection is there, but I 100% second this.
eBay sides HEAVILY on the buyer. Sold an iphone on ebay, dude broke it and claimed I shipped a broken phone EVEN WITH CLEAR PICTURES IN THE AD of a perfect phone . For a bit I was out phone and money, with a lot of complaining the buyer sent the busted phone back.

I agree, he is looking for some piece of mind but that will cost you an extra 10% final value fee on the item and shipping cost . If he is willing to pay the extra 10% it probably isn’t a scam.

Second this. Every time I’ve bought parts from a person directly (ie, not from a business), I’ve just found em on Craigslist and bought them with cash.

Yeah, I’m already out PayPal fees and offered to pay shipping ($40ish) so I’m not happy to spend any extra.  PayPal also offers purchase protection, which is why I try and use it when selling.

Oy - that really makes me not want to use eBay.

I’ve had good luck with CL as well, but the market is super limited for what I’m selling unfortunately.

Great points - that’s essentially what I’ve sent him back.  Thanks!

I would ask them for their reasoning, if it’s just for buyer protection, PayPal covers them in a similar fashion. eBay takes 10% of the purchase price, so I would avoid that if possible. I sell a good bit of car parts on eBay, and the 10% is worth it for me to reach a bigger consumer pool. However you end up selling, I would absolutely ship with signature required.
